Could a sugar glider survive in south TX?

I was just wondering, because a neighbor of mine(a 8 OR 9yr kid) had two and was playing with them outside and they were hoping over the place and he lost track of them. I happened to be outside playing catch with my cousin and his parents had us help him look for them but we never found them.I live in a Suburb type area with lots of woods and vegetation surrounding the neighborhood.How could this effect the environment if other Americans lost or released these animals?
