Les Paul or Stratocaster for a beginner?

Right now I play a Glen Burton Acoustic guitar, but i have been interested in purchasing my first electric guitar. My guitar teacher recommended a strat, but I love the Les Paul look.... I also have a low price range... so please help me choose A GOOD first electric guitar.
